Why We Only Install 4-6mm Prefinished Hardwood

Not all hardwood is created equal. One of the biggest decisions that affects your floor's long-term value is the wear layer thickness - and most homeowners don't even know to ask about it.

Here's the simple version: prefinished hardwood comes in different wear layer thicknesses, typically ranging from 2mm up to 6mm. The thicker that top layer is, the more times your floor can be sanded and refinished down the road. A 2mm wear layer leaves you with very little room to work with. A 4mm or 6mm wear layer? That's a floor with real staying power.

That's why we made 4mm our standard minimum - and we won't go below it. If you ever want to change the stain color, freshen up the finish, or address surface wear years from now, you'll have the material depth to make that happen. Floors with thin wear layers often can't be refinished at all, which means you're replacing the whole thing instead of simply restoring what you have.
