Hickory Hardwood Hall Install in Riverton

Hallways don't get enough credit. They connect every room in the house, they take constant foot traffic, and most people just throw carpet down and forget about it. Carpet in a hallway gets worn out fast - and once it's gone, it's gone.

Here's what we were working with - bare subfloor, stripped down and ready to go. The existing floor was already in the home, so the challenge was tying the new hallway installation right into what was already there. That's where the mixed-width boards come in. We used a combination of 3", 4", and 5" hickory boards to get the kind of natural, staggered look that flows seamlessly into the adjacent flooring. It doesn't look like a patch job. It looks like it was always there.

Why hickory? It's one of the hardest domestic hardwoods you can put down. For a hallway that sees daily foot traffic from everyone in the house - plus guests, pets, whatever else - that hardness matters. Carpet compresses, stains, and wears thin. Hickory holds up. The character in the grain, the subtle color variation between boards, the knots - all of that is just the wood being wood, and it looks great.

The boards are installed pre-finish here, which means the refinishing phase is still coming. That's where the color gets locked in and the surface gets its final protection. Once that's done, this hallway is going to look completely different from where it started. We'll be sharing that part of the process soon.
